Maryland-themed Shop Opens Its Doors in Glyndon

Home-based business opens shop with gift baskets, Ravens gear, Old Bay and other Maryland staples.

This place bleeds Maryland.

It's got all the staples and then some; Berger Cookies, Old Bay, Orioles and Ravens merchandise and Wockenfuss Candies.

And it's named after the state flower, which shares part of its name with the store's owner.

Black Eyed Susan, owned by Susan Seaman, held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday morning to commemorate the six-year-old company moving into a store space.

"Everything we sell is either made in Maryland, distributed in Maryland or has a Maryland theme," she said. "There are so many transplants. They want Utz Chips and they want Old Bay seasoning."

The store's specialty is gift baskets packes with non-perishable Maryland goodies like Catoctin Kettle and Caramel Popcorn and Chesapeake Bay Snack Mix. They have names like "The Jumbo Crab Bushel" and "Eastern Shore Team Time."

Seaman honed her gift basket skills when she worked for Sheraton Hotels, where she purchased items for the company's gift shops and put gift baskets together for VIP hotel guests. Post-9/11, with less people traveling, the hotel had less VIPs, and she was subsequently laid off in January 2002.

She started Black Eyes Susan out of her home in 2004, but over the years, customers kept asking if she had a shop they could come see. Now, she does.

Among those at the ribbon cutting was were Reisterstown-Owings Mills-Glyndon Chamber of Commerce board members and District 2 Councilwoman Vicki Almond, who said this is one of the fun things she gets to do in her position.

"It's nice to see another family business take over," she said.

Brion Weintzweig, founder of Able Hands Mobile Massage, said it's great to see a new business open in Glyndon.

"I'm happy to see it," he said. "Glyndon is growing."
